The Book of Mirrors

1983 matters less as a fully narrated period than as a date preserved in a phone record and understood only years later. A call that investigators had not considered relevant becomes, in Roy Freeman’s retrospective inquiry, the clue that connects Derek Simmons’s earlier case to the investigation of Joseph Wieder’s death in 1987.

The Date in the Call Record

While reviewing a copy of the calls made and received on Derek Simmons’s phone before and after his wife’s murder, Roy found twenty-eight entries arranged in five columns, recording numbers, addresses, subscribers, dates, and call lengths. One entry bore the name Jesse E. Banks and showed a call lasting fifteen minutes and forty-one seconds. The address, unlike the name, seemed familiar to Roy.

A Connection Missed at the Time

The call’s significance depended on recognizing its address and placing the record in the earlier case. In 1983, the name and number had not seemed relevant to investigators. When Roy began investigating Wieder’s death in December 1987, he had not thought to connect the two cases, separated by four years. The evidence had been available in the record, but its meaning had not yet been assembled.

Retrospective Recognition

The next morning, Roy came across the phone number almost by chance. Remembering an expression Derek had used in a recent conversation, he checked details and spent two hours drawing together the Simmons and Wieder cases. He then discussed his papers with an assistant at the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, who contacted Chief Brocato to confirm the details. The investigation’s direction changed as the old call became legible in relation to the later case.

Narrative Significance

The date therefore marks a gap between an event’s recording and its interpretation. The call log offers precise particulars—an address, a subscriber name, and a duration—but those particulars do not explain themselves. Their importance emerges only when Roy revisits the record and connects cases that had remained separate in his thinking. In the novel’s investigation, 1983 is a hinge: a past detail becomes newly consequential in 1987.
